Avoiding Plagiarism

The best way to avoid plagiarism is to know how to incorporate the words and ideas of other's into your work responsibly.  This section includes resources that will help you better understand how to develop a responsible research strategy, how to quote, paraphrase, and summarize, and how to cite sources correctly—both in the text and in the bibliography or reference list—in different citation styles.

  • How to Research Responsibly - This page includes links to sources that address how to take notes and gather information from print and online sources so you can properly acknowledge the author if you use the material.

  • How to Use Citation Styles - Whether you need to use MLA, APA, Chicago or another citation style, this page includes links to resources that explain and demonstrate their proper formatting for in-text citations, footnotes, and bibliographies.  Under Citation Tools in the Technology Tools section, there are links  to web sites and software that assist in building resource databases and properly formatting bibliographies in correct style format.

I'd like to open this up for discussion rather than just doing it, but might we want to retitle this whole section something like "Researching Responsibly," or "Working with Sources," or "Writing Original Work." In other words, move away from the stick and toward the carrot?
